Waiting on Wednesday is a weekly event hosted by Breaking the Spine highlighting upcoming books that we are eagerly anticipating.
This week I am featuring The Selection, the first book in a new dystopian series by Kiera Cass:
Here is the description from Goodreads:
For thirty-five girls, the Selection is the chance of a lifetime. The opportunity to escape the life laid out for them since birth. To be swept up in a world of glittering gowns and priceless jewels. To live in the palace and compete for the heart of the gorgeous Prince Maxon.
But for America Singer, being Selected is a nightmare. It means turning her back on her secret love with Aspen, who is a caste below her. Leaving her home to enter a fierce competition for a crown she doesn’t want. Living in a palace that is constantly threatened by violent rebel attacks.
Then America meets Prince Maxon. Gradually, she starts to question all the plans she’s made for herself- and realizes that the life she’s always dreamed of may not compare to a future she never imagined.
Wow, what a gorgeous cover! They get me every time. I never would have guessed it was a dystopian book based on the cover, but that just makes it even more intriguing to me. I like the dystopian / fairy tale twist with the prince and the competition with the other girls for the crown. America seems interesting since her motives for the Selection change throughout the story. The premise sounds very cute and I’m curious to see how it all plays out.
Look for The Selection April 24 2012 coming to you from HarperTeen. And you can read some background info about how the cover design came about at the author’s blog here and read Lenore’s interesting interview with the author here.
