Un-Break My Heart: Top Ten Heartbreaking Books

Top Ten Tuesday is hosted by The Broke and the Bookish and features a new top ten list each week.

To commemorate Valentine’s Day, this week’s topic is Top Ten Books That Broke Your Heart A Little.

Listed in no particular order:

5. We’ll Always Have Summer by Jenny Han – The final book in the Summer trilogy. The series is defined by a love triangle of a girl torn between two brothers, and each book breaks your heart a little.

6. Mockingjay / The Hunger Games series by Suzanne Collins – Although I don’t think this series is defined by the love triangle, there are certainly heartbreaking moments in terms of romance and great loss.

7. Before I Fall by Lauren Oliver – A series of life do-overs becomes more meaningful and heart breaking each time.

8. The Iron Queen by Julie Kagawa – Meghan and Ash’s epic romance is pushed to the limits in this nail biter.

9. Blood Promise / Vampire Academy series by Richelle Mead – Hard to choose which of the books in the series is the most heartbreaking. Ms. Mead knows how to bring on the angst in this vampire series that’s a cut above the rest.

10. Hallowed by Cynthia Hand – Love triangles bring on the heartbreak, and this book is no exception. A melancholy, emotional read all around.

We have several in common! Lauren Oliver is the queen of heartbreak. I love it lol. Forbidden is of course on my list too. I’m so happy you share my love of that book.

    My Top Ten Tuesday

    1. Lucy says:

She is the queen of heartbreak, isn’t she? I guess I just love angsty books. Yes, it’s hard not to think of Forbidden with this week’s topic.

  2. I don’t like to read books that make me cry but Delirium just snuck in there and brought me so close to tears!

  3. How I forgot to put Mockingjay on my list I do not know. I need to get Forbidden. It is making many lists.

    1. Lucy says:

I think you will be blown away by Forbidden, Amy. You remembered a few that I forgot like New Moon and The Mortal Instruments. So many heartbreaking books to choose from!

  4. Delirium! So heartbreaking. I can’t wait to read the follow-up. I can’t quite make myself read the last Summer book becasue I’m afraid she will pick the wrong brother and it will break my heart.

    1. Lucy says:

I know – I am counting the days for Pandemonium’s release. Wish I could give you a hint about the Summer series, but I do hope you read it sometime. It is a little departure from the previous books but still enjoyable.

  5. Candice says:

Oh, just looking at the covers of these books you know they’ll be heartbreaking! I’ve only read Delirium and Mockingjay from your list, but have Before I Fall sitting on my bookshelf… now I’m a little reluctant to read because I have a feeling it may break my heart! I’m actually reading The Iron King and am ready for some romance in it! Not cool that it gets heartbreaking later in the series!

    1. Lucy says:

Before I Fall is awesome, and you have to expect a little heartbreak from Oliver after reading Delirium, right?
The Iron Fey books get better and better. There will be romance, not to worry.

  6. Krista says:

Great picks! I definitely agree with some of those 🙂

  7. Fab list! I had If I Stay and Mockingjay in mine and am desperate to read TFIOS. Mine’s here if you’d like to take a look.

  8. Anna says:

But…I’m so scared to start The Fault in Our Stars! It’s supposed to be SO good, but SO sad!

  9. Miss Anderson says:

I always forget that Delirium and Before I Fall are both by Lauren Oliver. She is the queen of heartbreak, isn’t she? Can’t wait for Pandemonium because I want to see what she throws at me next.

I’m still putting off The Fault in Our Stars because I know it’s going to make me sob. I need to be in the right mood, and I’ve been far too happy lately!

  10. Steph says:

Oh my, I loved and cried all over these except We’ll Always Have Summer because I haven’t read it (or the other books in the series) yet. I should get on that, yes? I’ve heard good things and seeing it on this list only makes me want to read it more!

    Definitely a sob-worthy top ten!

  11. reutreads says:

THIS LIST. OMG THE SUMMER BOOKS. I cannot handle it.

  12. Megan says:

I almost put Mockingjay on my list, too. I can think of a few times my heart broke reading that one. =(

I definitely want to read The Fault in Our Stars. Just the synopsis of it sounds like it would be heartbreak city.

  13. ACK! I’m so sorry for being late to comment on this post! But our lists, I swear, are almost the same! The Iron Queen? Check. Delirium? Check. The Summer books? Check. Gayle Forman? Check. So crazy. But this is a great list, and not just because we had our hearts broken by lots of the same books. The ones that I’ve read at least are so devastating in their own ways. But I still love them. I’m afraid to read The Fault in Our Stars though because I don’t know if I can handle the sads right now! Eek!

  14. lil says:

The fault in our stars…Really sad and it made me realize how lucky i am…John Green bravo
