The Wild Ones Blog Tour: Interview with M. Leighton

I’m excited to welcome author M. Leighton to the blog today. I recently read her book The Wild Ones, a contemporary romance that’s new to paperback from Berkley Books. (Check out my review here)

Welcome to the blog, Michelle! Thanks for answering a few of my burning questions. I had fun reading The Wild Ones, and look forward to catching up on your other books. The Wild Ones by M. Leighton

Thank you so much for having me on today! I’m so grateful:)

You’ve had huge success in self-publishing but with this paperback release of The Wild Ones you have a whole new audience. Would you like to provide a short intro to the book to your new readers?

Yes, thank you.  The Wild Ones is about Cami, the daughter of a thoroughbred horse breeder.  She’s lived a privileged life that’s always been pleasing to him.  Until she meets Trick.  Cami never expected a guy like Trick to come along and she wasn’t really ready for him.  He puts a kink in Cami’s smooth existence and she could be the person who wrecks all of Trick’s plans.  The world keeps telling them they’re wrong for each other, that their future is doomed.  But their hearts say something else.

For readers that have read the self-published version of The Wild Ones what would you like them to know about the new revised Berkley edition?

First and foremost, that I would never change the book so much that you’ll be lost if you don’t read it. I would never do that to my readers! This version is more…enhanced, I guess.  There are no fade-to-black love scenes (yay for more steam!) and there are several areas where more explanation is provided, but nothing that has been added changes the outcome of the story.  It just gives more detail. So if you like detail, I hope you enjoy it.  *winks*

New Adult has been a big topic lately, and there is still some question about what it really means. What is your definition of New Adult, and does The Wild Ones fall into that category?

Levi's ad Go ForthIn my opinion, New Adult is the step between Adult fiction and Young Adult fiction.  In my opinion, Young Adult literature is the type of material that starts to delve into some heavier subject matter, but the topics are presented in a less-harsh manner and many details are omitted simply out of deference to the target reader’s age.  There are no strict rules, which is why you find some books that are wildly inappropriate for youth.  A lot is left up to the author and his/her conscience, so this is just my opinion.  I see New Adult as the time when the kid gloves come off.

Cowboy romance is popular now so it seems like The Wild Ones is right on trend. What do you think makes cowboy love interests so irresistible to readers?

I think there’s something engaging and quaint and sexy about a guy with low hanging Levis, impeccable manners and a nice Southern drawl. Not everyone has had the pleasure of meeting a cowboy, but many have envisioned it.  We who HAVE had the pleasure and live here amongst them have the distinct privilege of bringing these great men to life in the pages of a book.  And oh, what fun it is!  LOL

Wild horses always make me think of Spirit

Trick has a knack for taming wild horses. Is horseback riding a hobby of yours, and have you spent time around wild horses?

I’ve been horseback riding, although I wouldn’t call it a hobby. Like Cami, I was thrown once and it dampened my enthusiasm for a while. LOL  And I’ve never been around wild horses, but I have every intention of traveling to the outer banks this year to visit the very horses this book was written about.  Keep an eye on my blog, because I’ll be posting lots of pictures and doing a lot of squealing, I’m sure.

Can you give us any hints about Rusty and Jenna’s story in the sequel The Wild Child?

I’ll just say that there are some very funny parts and that Rusty is every bit as hot as Trick. *winks again*  There’s much to be said for a man who works with heavy car parts all day long.  LOL

Thanks for the chat, Michelle and Berkley Books!

About The Wild Ones:
Passion as hot as midnight in the South and love as wild as the horses they tame. The Wild Ones by M. Leighton
The darling daughter of a champion Thoroughbred breeder, Camille “Cami” Hines has a pedigree that rivals some of her father’s best horses. Other than feeling a little suffocated at times, Cami thought she was happy with her boyfriend, her life and her future—until she met Patrick Henley.
“Trick” blurs the lines between what Cami wants and what is expected of her—and he just happens to be so sexy she can’t keep her hands off him. While they both know that Trick would lose his much needed job on the ranch if anyone finds out, they can’t resist the lure of their scorchingly hot encounters.
But when Trick stumbles upon a note from his father, it triggers a series of revelations that could ruin what he and Cami have worked so hard to overcome. It turns out there’s more to Trick’s presence at the ranch than either of them knew, and secrets with the power to tear them apart…
