Audiobook Week Discussion: Finding Audiobooks

It’s the last day of Audiobook Week! Audiobook week buttonIt was fun chatting about all things audiobooks with you this week!

Today’s prompt: Finding Audiobooks

Where do you learn about great audiobook titles? Buy your audiobooks? Share your secrets with the rest of us! We’d particularly love to know what narrators or publishers are active in social media or do a great job communicating with listeners.

I guess I find audiobooks the same way I find out about books. I peruse Goodreads, Book Blogs, Edelweiss, Publisher’s websites, Author’s websites, Audible, and Twitter to learn about interesting titles.

The thing with audiobooks that’s different than books is that the narrator is usually not announced that far in advance. So, oftentimes I’ll find out about a new release audiobook the same month of publication. Then I’ll listen to a sample of the book to see if I click with the narrator, and keep an eye out for reviews on my favorite audiobook blogs. If it’s a book I’m interested in, and a favorite narrator reads it, then I’m good to go!

There are not as many bloggers that review audiobooks as they do books, but one great resource for audiobook exclusive reviews is Audiobook Jukebox. There you can add your link to an audiobook review or look up a title to read reviews. Even the review setting on Audible now defaults to the print review (so annoying) so it’s nice to have one place to find audiobook reviews. You can also participate in their Solid Gold Reviewer program and receive audiobooks for review.

I don’t buy too many audiobooks, but when I do it’s from Audible when they have their great sales. Like right now there’s a BOGO member sale. Downpour is a new audiobook site that’s worth a look, and their prices seem pretty good too. I also look over the audiobook titles at the library, and use the Overdrive system. And of course, summer is the best because we can download two free audiobooks a week from SYNC! That right there is how I got into audiobooks to begin with when I downloaded The Hunger Games in 2010.

Audiobook Publishers and Narrators on Social Media

I think I follow all of the Audiobook Publishers on Twitter and Facebook, and I really want to start following more narrators. I’m thinking that’s a good way to find out about new audiobook releases too!

I’m not going to reinvent the wheel and list all the twitter handles of the audiobook community. In fact, I just found this awesome list that MissSusie’s Reading & Observations compiled which includes all the twitter handles of the audiobook publishers, narrators, bloggers, and audio biz folks. What a goldmine of information! Here is part one and part two for your reference. Follow away! You can also look at the #fridaylistens updates on Twitter for audio recs.

How do you find your audiobooks?

  1. I keep on forgetting about SYNC. I must remember to check them out more frequently.

SYNC is such an awesome summer program for audiobooks! I just found out about it this year and I’ve been hooked! 🙂
I also use the overdrive option at my library when I find a book I want to listen to that doesn’t have an outrageous waiting line.

  3. Thanks for posting the link to the list of Twitter handles. I’m off to check that out now.

  4. Off to audible to shop the BOGO sale… thanks 😉

Same here – I find out about them the same way I do books. I’ve thought about joining audible but I’m overflowing with audios right now.

great resources, lucy. i usually find them via audible, the library, and just word of mouth. audiobox jukebox i have tried once (and am still listening to that one) but their website is so bad. it’s so hard to search for or find anything, i really wish it were better because it could be a really cool site if it was.

  9. Thanks for all the links! I usually get recommendations from blogger friends, goodreads and Audiojukebox. I get most of my audio’s from my library so I’m sort of at their mercy but I love all sorts of genres so it usually works out.

I’m so bummed that I missed the download from sync last week. Was really looking forward to Raven Boys and Bless Me, Ultima! I’m not very good at doing research to seek out books (I haven’t updated my Goodreads since 2009) so I mostly follow whimsy and blogger recommendation. I do need to check out Downpour!

  11. I always forget about SYNC. But maybe that’s because it’s only in the summer. Need to see what’s up this week.

  12. thanks for sharing, I didn’t know about Miss Susie’s lists, how cool!

  13. Thanks for the link to the Twitter handles of audiobook publishers. I had some of those but not all!
