Debut Author Interview with Lydia Kang (Control)

Lydia Kang’s debut novel CONTROL hits shelves this week. I’m very pleased that Dr. Kang is here today to tell us about her sci-fi romantic thriller.

Congrats on your debut novel! What has been your favorite part of your journey so far?

Meeting other authors! It’s a bit of a crazy journey between the sale and publication. Lots of emotions going on. So I’m really grateful to have found new friends in the process. We’ve supported each other throughout the year and I can tell already some will be lifelong friends.

Given that you are a doctor you are able to give some medical authenticity to Control’s scientific story. Tell us about some of the medical research you conducted for Control.

I researched telomeres, retinoic acid and limb regrowth, whether or not humans could actually photosynthesize, and of course, Ondine’s Curse (which my main character suffers from–also more properly called Congenital Central Hypoventilation Syndrome.)

You have a Medical Mondays feature on your blog where you write about fictional scenarios. What has been your favorite Medical Monday post?

I’ve had so many that were so fun! This one needed a bit of research that made me feel like Sherlock Holmes. I had to look up the soil chemistry and composition in suburban Boston to figure out how quickly a corpse would decompose.

What was your favorite scene to write in Control? Any favorite breakout characters?

I had a lot of fun writing the club scene. I wasn’t a party girl at all in college in high school, so this was really using my imagination! As for break-out characters? I’d say Caliga. She plays a bigger part in Catalyst.

Can you give us any hints about the sequel, Catalyst?

I just did. 🙂 Also, there will be teens who can live underwater and a lot of new, crazy environments and situations for my poor characters to deal with!

Thanks for having me!

About Control:

When a crash kills their father and leaves them orphaned, Zel knows she needs to protect her sister, Dyl. But before Zel has a plan, Dyl is taken by strangers using bizarre sensory weapons, and Zel finds herself in a safe house for teens who aren’t like any she’s ever seen before—teens who shouldn’t even exist. Using broken-down technology, her new friends’ peculiar gifts, and her own grit, Zel must find a way to get her sister back from the kidnappers who think a powerful secret is encoded in Dyl’s DNA.

A spiraling, intense, romantic story set in 2150—in a world of automatic cars, nightclubs with auditory ecstasy drugs, and guys with four arms—this is about the human genetic “mistakes” that society wants to forget, and the way that outcasts can turn out to be heroes.
