Top Ten Tuesday is an original feature from The Broke and the Bookish. This week we are talking about our Ten Fairytale Retellings We’ve read or Want to Read. I was not going to participate in this topic because I don’t read a lot of fairytale retellings, being such a contemporary fan myself. But there are actually several I have my eye on!
Here are Ten Fairytale Retellings I Want to Read:
Winter by Marissa Meyer – On sale November 10, the fourth and final book of the Lunar Chronicles series is a Snow White retelling.
The Shadow Queen by C.J. Redwine – This Snow White retelling is due out in February of next year and it sounds dark and exciting. The huntsman is a dragon shifter.
The Forbidden Wish by Jessica Khoury – On sale February 23, this Arabian Nights retelling features a girl Jinni named Zahra who is torn between wanting her freedom and her love for Aladdin.
A Thousand Nights by E.K. Johnston – On sale October 6, this is a loose retelling of the Arabian Nights story. I still need to catch up on The Wrath and the Dawn too, another Thousand and One Nights story.
Uprooted by Naomi Novik – Some say this is based on Beauty and the Beast but the author says the protagonist is based on a character in a Polish fairy tale called “Agnieszka Skrawek Nieba.” Either way, this sounds great. I started listening to the audiobook and really like it so far.
The Sacred Lies of Minnow Bly by Stephanie Oakes – This story is based on Grimm’s The Handless Maiden. I have a copy and can’t wait to read it.
A Court of Thorns and Roses by Sarah J. Maas – This New Adult book blends faeries with the Beauty and the Beast story. I will get to this one this year!
Cruel Beauty by Rosamund Hodge – The first book of the Cruel Beauty Universe blends Cupid & Psyche with Beauty and the Beast. I have the audio of this one and need to give it a listen.
Grounded: The Adventures of Rapunzel by Megan Morrison – This middle grade reimagining of Rapunzel (featuring Jack Beanstalker) sounds so fun!
The Isle of the Lost by Melissa de la Cruz – Did you watch Disney’s Descendants this weekend? I have it saved on my DVR to watch with the teen. This story is about the children of the Disney Villains and is a prequel to Descendants.
Let me know your favorite fairytale retellings!
Yes, definitely curious about “The Shadow Queen.” It looks and sounds amazing. Fabulous list. 🙂
We had quite a few similar choices :). I’m so excited for The Shadow Queen. I love when retellings are more dark and twisted. A Court of Thorns and Roses does a great job of that. I am realizing now that in my post I put an Aladdin retelling for The Forbidden Wish, when technically it’s an Arabian Nights retelling. Oops!
I really want to read The Shadow Queen, A Court of Thorns and Roses, and Uprooted.
My highest recommendation when it comes to fairy tale retellings would be Princess of Thorns by Stacey Jay. It’s kind of a fairy tale retelling based on Sleeping Beauty. I say kind of because it’s about Sleeping Beauty’s daughter.
I’ve definitely had my eyes on The Shadow Queen and The Forbidden Wish! Great picks!
Check out my TTT.
This was such a fun post idea this week. I love retellings and you picked some good ones. Drop by my blog and sign up for my give-away. It relates to today’s meme.
My TTT Retellings
Wow, a Handless Maiden retelling? That sounds ominous. I want to read it! The Arabian Nights books also sound exciting. I worked a lot with the 1001 Nights as a storyteller, I am curious about other people’s versions 🙂

Out of these, I really want to read Grounded and The Isle of the Lost! I am also a huge fan of Sleeping Beauty, so I want to try out as many retellings as I can find! ^^ ACOTAR is one of my favourite books I’ve read this year, and I definitely recommend it to everyone who loves Beauty and the Beast (and faeries)!
That’s not a genre I gravitate towards but my sister loves them.
Wow! All of these look good! Some of these I haven’t seen before and haven’t been on other lists I have seen today.
I have the Shadow Queen, a thousand nights and ACOTAR on my list as well.
I did not know that The sacred Life of Minnow Bly was a fairytale retelling. I really want to read that book but now i am even more interested, especially since i actually know that original tale and i want to see how they mix that with the cult part of the book. thank you for pointing that out. 🙂
i have not heard of the forbidden wish before but that sounds fantastic, and i will look into that.
Great list 🙂
Sacred Lies looks really good! My TTT list
I have a few of these on my list this week as well. I can’t wait for Winter!
I just received a copy of A Thousand Nights. I cannot wait to read it.
