Top Ten Books I Resolve to Read in 2013

Top Ten Tuesday is an original feature from The Broke and the Bookish. This week is about listing books we want to catch up on in the New Year; bookish New Year’s resolutions I guess you could say. For whatever reason I haven’t had a chance to read these ten books yet, though I’m eager to remedy that in 2013! These books are already in my possession waiting to be read- listed in no particular order:

1. Looking for Alaska by John GreenΒ My daughter told me I need to read this before she goes back to school next week, so I’m on a deadline with this one! My copy was loaned out but I’ve replaced it with the box set so no more excuses.

2. Code Name Verity by Elizabeth Wein I think I’ve been putting this off because it’s a little out of my comfort zone since I don’t read too many World War II books about pilots. However, it’s popular with bloggers I trust so I’m determined to give it a try.

3. Grave Mercy by R.L. LaFevers – I have this book in audiobook format, which will make it easier to fit in. Assassin nuns, romance and political intrigue- sounds very unique!

4. Days of Blood and Starlight by Laini Taylor – I’ve been waiting to read this sequel ever since I finished Daughter of Smoke and Bone, so I’m not sure why I’ve put off reading it. I kind of wish I had the audiobook instead of the print version, though I know I’ll enjoy this one once I start it.

5. The Crown of Embers by Rae Carson – Another highly anticipated sequel that everyone loves that’s hiding out on my kindle. It sounds even better than Girl of Fire and Thorns too.

6. Second Chance Summer by Morgan Matson – I overlooked this one for a while because I was not in the mood for a sad read, but it does sound like a lovely contemporary book.

7.Β Meant to Be by Lauren Morrill This book looks like it’s right up my alley…romance and London, sweet and funny, what’s not to like? Why haven’t I read it yet? I’m noticing a lot of angst on my list so I’m glad this book is on the fluffy side.

8.Β Tell the Wolves I’m Home by Carol Rifka Brunt – I just got this for Christmas (thanks sis!) and the cover is gorgeous in person. It’s a coming of age story that takes place in 1987 and sounds heartbreaking and powerful and I’m looking forward to experiencing it.

9. Touching the Surface by Kimberly Sabatini I really like afterlife stories and have had this book on my radar for a while now. It sounds like a tearjerker though which is why I think I’ve put it off.

10. Bittersweet by Sarah OcklerI just picked this up in paperback and it looks like a great wintery read. There’s ice-skating, romance, family drama and cupcakes – sounds sweet to me!

Happy New Year, dear readers! What books do you resolve to read this year?

I’ve given up on any kind of resolutions but I would like to read one of John Green’s books. Happy New Year!

  7. Code Name Verity is out of my comfort zone too. I don’t read many historical fiction books but since this book has been cropping on a lot of Best of 2012 lists, I know I’ll eventually get to it.

  10. I feel the same way about Code Name Verity. I’m going to read that one this year for sure, but it is definitely out of comfort zone. I think the fact that so many bloggers like it says a lot and gives me a lot of hope for it.

  11. Tammy Sparks says:

Looks like we have Days of Blood & Starlight in common, but I completely forgot about Grave Mercy. I’ve heard nothing but rave reviews, so I guess I have one more to add:) Great list, good luck, Lucy!

  12. Oksana says:

You have great picks for the 2013, I’ve added some of them to my TBR list, especially Code Name Verity, it sounds like a great read.

The Crown of Embers is on my kindle too just waiting to be read. Grave Mercy is one of the books I had every intention to read last year so it’s high on my list too. Great list!

  14. I really hope you enjoy Looking For Alaska! It’s probably my favourite John Green book from the three that I’ve read. I haven’t read Meant to Be but it seems like a cute read,so I hope you enjoy it!

Happy New Year and I hope you get to read some wonderful books!

  15. theairtwit says:

Looking for Alaska is a great one, and it’s my personal John Green favorite. I really hope you enjoy it! I started Code Name Verity last year, but I had to put it back on hold since it was the library’s copy — it’s great, from what I did read, and I have to say that I’m peeved at myself for skimming ahead… I think that is why I made it halfway, but I really need to finish it.

  16. Bree says:

Looking for Alaska is on my list as well…and Code Name Verity is awesome!! Many of the rest of those are on my TBR, too. Enjoy reading all of them!!

Oooooh! I am so excited for you to read Code Name Verity, Lucy! No pressure!! But, at the heart of it, the story is about friendship, the most wonderful best friends in the world, and I really do hope you enjoy it. The beginning might seems slow and a tad confusing but I promise it’s worth it if you push on through πŸ™‚

And I have Second Chance Summer, Meant to Be and Bittersweet, all sitting on my shelf, being neglected – I must read them this year, too!

  18. Quinn says:

Meant to Be is totally adorable. I hope you like it.

I also want to read Looking for Alaska. I have a copy, but I need to be in the right mood to read anything John Green. But especially this one. I think it will be an emotional read.

Good luck on your reading resolutions πŸ™‚

    Happy New Year!

  19. Merin says:

I really want to read Code Name Verity and Meant to Be. I still have e-galleys of both that I never got to last year; maybe I can squeeze them!

  20. Danya says:

I found Grave Mercy to be quite a gripping read – hope you enjoy it! I need to pick up Second Chance Summer and Bittersweet at some point, I’ve heard some good things about each of them.

  21. Great list! I have some of those books on my To Read list! Looking forward to comparing! πŸ™‚

  22. vmcarswell says:

Grave Mercy is one that I wasn’t very interested in at first, but after seeing all the rave reviews over it, I changed my mind and it will probably be one of my 2013 reads, too.

  23. Days of Blood and Starlight is brilliant! Such a strong second book. I’m keen to read more John Green too πŸ™‚ Great list. Happy reading! xx

  24. Code Name Verity you MUST READ! It’s brilliant.

I’m with you on Looking For Alaska and Meant to Be are two books I desperately want to read too!

    Great list! πŸ™‚

  25. squee1313 says:

Crown of Embers and Blood and Starlight both excellent. Get to it!

  26. Tracey says:

I agree with your daughter! Looking for Alaska is amazing πŸ™‚

  27. I LOVED Tell the Wolves I’m Home (and that cover!), I can’t wait to see what you think. That has been the book I’ve encouraged the most people to read this past year. Happy New Year!

  28. Reut says:

Grave Mercy is great and Days of Blood and Starlight is super angsty. Great reads!

Also, just wanted to take a minute to say that I know I haven’t been commenting a lot lately. Please know that I am always reading, if not commenting, and I am working on making that a thing in 2013! Have a great year.

  29. bookgoonie says:

Here, Here. I have a similar problem. I only don’t have 3 of the books above & have only read Looking for Alaska. I too vow to read the other 6 books taunting me from your list πŸ˜‰

  30. Sunny says:

Reallyyyyyy have been meaning to and wanting to read Code Name Verity, Second Chance Summer was SO good. Read it now πŸ˜‰ I also want to read Looking for Alaska because I absolutely loved The Fault in Our Stars so that makes me incredibly envious that you have the boxed set. I need to buy it! Most of your list are books that I have to agree with you on, I’m determined to read them soon.

  31. Oh jeeze I want to flail over so many of these!! LOVE Grave Mercy, it is just so good. Bittersweet is a really cute wintery read. Second Chance Summer was definitely a tough read, but it really was beautiful and worth reading. It’s a massive book but I ended up spending the afternoon reading it in bed because I couldn’t put it down. Crown of Embers IS better than the first book, I just loved it!! And Code Name Verity… I actually don’t read many historicals despite having a B.A. in history, but I did enjoy it. It’s another tough read (it will definitely shock you in some parts, especially one part), but such an amazing story about friendship, and one of those books that you have to think about.

  32. Krystianna says:

I’ve heard amazing things about Grave Mercy but I still have to get to it as well. Hopefully I’ll get to it before the sequel comes out! I’ll just have to find some time to read it since it’s so huge.
