Blog Tour: Poison by Bridget Zinn

I am so honored to be part of the Poison blog tour celebrating author Bridget Zinn. Her book is charming and adorable and I’m so glad I got the chance to read it. Since Bridget is not around to take part in the festivities of the launch of her debut, a group of bloggers and authors have banded together to make the most of this momentous occasion.

Poison by Bridget ZinnAbout Poison:

Sixteen-year-old Kyra, a highly-skilled potions master, is the only one who knows her kingdom is on the verge of destruction—which means she’s the only one who can save it. Faced with no other choice, Kyra decides to do what she does best: poison the kingdom’s future ruler, who also happens to be her former best friend. But, for the first time ever, her poisoned dart…misses.

Now a fugitive instead of a hero, Kyra is caught in a game of hide-and-seek with the king’s army and her potioner ex-boyfriend, Hal. At least she’s not alone. She’s armed with her vital potions, a too-cute pig, and Fred, the charming adventurer she can’t stop thinking about. Kyra is determined to get herself a second chance (at murder), but will she be able to find and defeat the princess before Hal and the army find her?

Kyra is not your typical murderer, and she’s certainly no damsel-in-distress—she’s the lovable and quick-witted hero of this romantic novel that has all the right ingredients to make teen girls swoon.

Poison is such a cute read! Sometimes I find fantasy hard to connect with, and a little slow going, but Poison is just a fun adventure and I was quickly under its spell. Kyra is a potion expert out to assassin her BFF the princess, so right away that had my attention. The tone is light and funny with a middle grade feel to it. I think reluctant readers will be enchanted by this one.

Kyra is self-reliant and intelligent but a little socially awkward. She has a rag-tag group of traveling companions including an adorable tracker pig named Rosie. Also the mysterious yet cheerful Fred is always around just when Kyra needs him. They help get each other out of scrapes and bond over their love of delicious food. It cracked me up when Kyra said she was trained as a dairymaid.

There’s some mystery to the story too. Why did the assassin plot go so badly and what is up with Kyra’s powers? Along with Kyra’s official mission, she’s also on a journey of self-discovery.

Poison doesn’t take itself too seriously and get bogged down with too much detail. There’s no maps or a lot of time spent on historical background. But it is full of whimsy and has some surprises to it. Zinn put together a light-hearted, zippy fairy-tale adventure that is enjoyable to read. Poison has a strong female lead in an imaginative setting that’s appropriate for the whole family.

Talking about Firsts:

As part of the blog tour celebrating the debut theme, we are asked to talk about a notable “first.” One thing that I think is cool about Bridget is that she was also a librarian, a profession dear to my heart. My mom also happened to be a librarian and this blog would not be here today without her encouraging my love of reading. As an introvert, it’s hard to put yourself out there on social media and hit that Post button. So, starting The Reading Date is a big first for me! I used to be too intimidated to even leave a comment on a blog post. Librarians are heroes to me, and I hope in some small way I’m doing my part to encourage a love of reading with this blog.

About Bridget Zinn:

Bridget Zinn author photoBridget grew up in Wisconsin. She went to the county fair where she met the love of her life, Barrett Dowell. They got married right before she went in for exploratory surgery which revealed she had colon cancer. They christened that summer the “summer of love” and the two celebrated with several more weddings. Bridget continued to read and write until the day she died. Her last tweet was “Sunshine and a brand new book. Perfect.”

Bridget wanted to make people laugh and hoped readers would enjoy spending time with the characters she created. As a librarian/writer she loved books with strong young women with aspirations. She also felt teens needed more humorous reads. She really wanted to write a book with pockets of warmth and happiness and hoped that her readers’ copies would show the watermarks of many bath time reads.

poison looks like a really fun book. i have been waiting for it to come out for a while now. so glad you liked it and it’s cool that bloggers are putting together a tour for it.

i love your “first” share. librarians are definitely awesome. having a blog is definitely hard if you are a shy person, but also really liberating. sometimes it’s easier to say things online than it would be to say in person. i am glad that you took a chance and started this blog because i love reading it and interacting with you via twitter, etc.

    🙂
