Mailbox Monday (90)

Mailbox Monday buttonMailbox Monday is a weekly event where we share our latest book arrivals. Link up and find new mailboxes to stalk at the Mailbox Monday blog!

Hi all! Since I was on vacation for the last week I ended up taking a mini blogging break. I missed a few earthquakes in my hometown while I was gone, and got a good dose of San Francisco rain and fog. Fun to be back though! I managed to throw some business at Bay Area bookstores:

Mailbox Monday 90

Bookstore purchases:

From the awesome BookShop Santa Cruz:

The Strange & Beautiful Sorrows of Ava Lavender  by Leslye Walton – This literary YA debut has a dose of magical realism and ponders what it means to be human. Ava Lavender was born with wings, seemingly without purpose.

The Thing About Luck by Cynthia Kadohata, illustrated by Julia Kuo – A 2013 National Book Award winner so I have high hopes for this one. Luck is a MG book about a girl named Summer who lives with her grandparents and has been having nothing but bad luck.

Perfect by Rachel Joyce – This is a historical fiction / coming of age that I’ve heard good things about.

The Storied Life of A.J. Fikry by Gabrielle Zevin – I just read an e-galley of this and found it completely charming. Somehow they had a used copy at the store even though it’s out April 1st.

And I picked up a couple books from the always fabulous Green Apple Books:  (They were just named PW Bookstore of the year!)

The Summer of Letting Go by Gae Polisner – A girl is grieving her little brothers death and meets a boy who is eerily similar to him.

Before My Eyes by Caroline Block – This thriller is about the lives of three people living one summer in Long Island, and covers topics like mental illness and gun control.

Review Audiobooks:

Thank you Simon & Schuster Audio!

Clipped Wings by Helena Hunting, performed by Elizabeth Louise and Jason Carpenter – A romance between a tattoo artist and his client – two damaged people that are afraid to love.

Safe With Me by Amy Hatvany, performed by Joy Osmanski, Rebekkah Ross and Cassandra Campbell – A story of two mothers and a daughter whose lives are linked by tragedy.

Maybe Someday by Colleen Hoover, performed by Zachary Webber and Angela Goethals – I loved the book and look forward to a re-listen!

Twisted by Emma Chase, performed by Charlotte Penfield – This is a sequel to Tangled from Kate’s POV, and it’s set two years later.

Review e-books:

Wish You Were Italian by Kristin Rae – This looks cute – it’s about a girl named Pippa vacationing in Italy one summer, and all her romantic and sightseeing adventures.

Bleed Like Me by Christa Desir – This book sounds intense – it’s about self-harm and obsessive love, and the author has pictures of Sid & Nancy as her inspiration on her blog. I definitely want to fit this one in soon!

  18. Hi Lucy,

You had a great haul of books waiting for you on your return, I hope that you had a great vacation.

There are too many to choose my own personal favourite, although I guess the A.J. Fikry has to right up there, as I have heard all good things about it and it is set in a bookshop, so what’s not to like!

Enjoy your week and Happy Reading,

    Yvonne

Welcome back! Yes there was another earthquake last weekend. It was a pretty long one. Great books this week. My friend read Ava Lavender and loved it. And I can’t believe you found a used copy of the Zevin book. I think I am going to that signing tonight. Welcome back and happy reading, Lucy!

  22. Leslie says:

Nice selection. I can never pass up checking out bookstores on vacation. It gives me an excuse to buy more books. Perfect was good – different from the author’s first book though.
