Happy Star Wars Day or Cinco de Mayo if you’re reading this Monday. This week saw heat waves in SoCal, Free Comic Book Day, California Bookstore Day, HarperCollins acquired Harlequin, and the #WeNeedDiverseBooks campaign took the Internet by storm. Busy week!

Here’s my week in books:

Love Letters to the Dead by Ava Dellaira

Audiobooks for Review:

The Snow Queen by Michael Cunningham, performed by Claire Danes, from Macmillan Audio – This is from the author of The Hours, and is about family, love, loss and spirituality. And it doesn’t hurt that Claire Danes is the narrator.

Sure Signs of Crazy by Karen Harrington, performed by Cassandra Morris from Hachette Audio – This MG book looks cute and quirky, and it’s about 12-year-old Sarah, a girl with a painful past who comes to grip with her secrets one summer.

Torn Away by Jennifer Brown, performed by Lauren Fortgang from Hachette Audio – A girl loses everything and everyone she holds dear in a tornado and has to start again in unfamiliar surroundings.

Forgotten Sins by Rebecca Zanetti, performed by Karen White from Hachette Audio -The first book in the Sin Brothers series, Forgotten Sins is a romantic suspense novel about newlyweds Josie and Shane. Shane disappears and is found two years later with amnesia and some new abilities.

E-Books for Review:

Perfectly Good White Boy by Carrie Mesrobian from Carolrhoda Lab- This made my day! The Sex & Violence author is back with another male POV book & it looks fantastic. PGWB is due out in October and is about a guy who just got dumped, and is about to join the Marine Corps.

Knockout Games by G. Neri from Carolrhoda Lab – Maybe you’ve heard of the Knockout Game on the news? It’s a “game” where kids target a random stranger and attempt to knock them out with one punch. In Knockout Games, G. Neri digs into the phenomenon and tells the story of KO participant Kalvin, and Erica the outsider who films the incidents.

Even in Paradise by Chelsey Philpot from Harper Collins – Described as “The Great Gatsby meets Looking for Alaska.”

On the Edge by Allison van Diepen from HarperTeen – This is about a girl caught in the middle of a Miami gang war.

Kiss Kill Vanish by Jessica Martinez from Katherine Tegan Books – A girl witnesses a murder committed by her boyfriend, and ordered by her father. Time to leave town!

Such a great haul! I’ve been wanting to read Love Letters to the Dead despite how sad it looks 🙂 And Kiss Kill Vanish looks super good!

  5. Hi Sam,

I doubt that we really have enough bookstores left here in the UK, to muster up anything like a ‘book day’. It seems as though the supermarkets have taken over as pseudo bookstores, although be default they only really ever have the space to stock the top sellers. Plus which, I object to lining their corporate pockets any more than I already need to by buying my groceries alone!

You have some amazing books this week, although i did notice that the selection from your ‘book day’ haul, had quite a strong theme of death running through them. They are all by new to me authors, but I do like the sound of ‘Pointe’ and ‘There Will Come A Time’.

I hope that you enjoy them all and have a good week,

    Yvonne

  8. It was a crazy week in books, wasn’t it? I was shocked to read the news about Harlequin! I hope they continue with all their lines, they’re a one-stop-shop for most ages.
Have a lovely week and may the force be with you 🙂

  9. The Snow Queen is on my list…loved The Hours and A Home at the Edge of the World, by Cunningham. Sure Signs of Crazy was a book I enjoyed.

This weekend was indeed crazy. I actually did not get to go to any bookstores on Sat but my friend picked up the Neil Gaiman for me. I did hit up a comic book store though so I feel like I supported something. Ooh you must be excited about the Carrie Mesrobian. I know you loved Sex & Violence. I have been hearing good things about Pointe as well as Love Letters and There Will Come a Time. Happy reading, Lucy!

I absolutely want to read Lover Letters to the Dead, and I heard great things about Pointe, too.
And now I’ll have to add The Snow Queen to my wish list – I’m very interested in having Clare Danes as a narrator!
    Happy reading!
