When I was 25 years old, it came to my attention that I had never had a girlfriend. At the time, I was actually under the impression that I was in a relationship, so this bit of news came as something of a shock.

Why was Josh still single? To find out, he tracked down each of the girls he had tried to date since middle school and asked them straight up: What went wrong?

The results of Josh's semiscientific investigation are in your hands. From a disastrous Putt-Putt date involving a backward prosthetic foot, to his introduction to CFD (Close Fast Dancing), and a misguided "grand gesture" at a Miss America pageant, this story is about looking for love - or at least a girlfriend - in all the wrong places.

Poignant, relatable, and wholly hilarious, this memoir is for anyone who has ever wondered, "Is there something wrong with me?"

(Spoiler Alert: the answer is no.)

Josh Sundquist writes about his experiences trying to find a girlfriend (and find himself) in his memoir We Should Hang Out Sometime. The results are funny, awkward, sweet and relatable.

I hadn’t heard of motivational speaker/Paralympian/YouTube personality Josh Sundquist before picking up this book. I just thought the premise of WSHOS sounded quirky and fun, and it reminded me of a real-life, teenage version of High Fidelity. (In that book/movie, the protagonist seeks out his old girlfriends to find out where he went wrong in their relationships.) Listening to this audiobook made me curious to check out Sundquist’s YouTube channel – did he find the love he was looking for?

In We Should Hang Out Sometime (that’s his pickup line), Sundquist chronicles his quest to find a girlfriend, from his early years through college. He talks about each girl he “hung out with” and then in follow-up chapters he visits the girls in the present day to get their feedback on why things didn’t work out. Was it his personality, was it the fact that he’s an amputee, or were they just not that into him? Wouldn’t you like to get that feedback? (well, I personally don’t think I am that brave) The answers are insightful and surprising.

The stories are honest, sometimes comical, and often awkward and cringe-worthy. Readers may recall their own dating disasters, though reading about someone else’s is infinitely funnier.

The print book edition of this book contains hand-drawn charts and graphs, and I bet they really add to the story. I listened to the audiobook version, and that doesn’t contain any of those bells and whistles, though it does have the benefit of having the author’s narration. Josh Sundquist is an engaging storyteller and this audiobook is a fast listen. It took me a couple of starts to get into the story, but once I got through a few chapters I had to keep listening to see how things would work out.

Give this book a try if you like humorous memoirs and/or relationship stories.

  3. This sounds like a really interesting audiobook! I’ve been trying to listen to more audiobooks this year and I really like funny ones. Great review. Maybe I’ll check it out though the book with the graphs and charts sounds a little more interesting.
