For fans of We Were Liars and How I Live Now comes a haunting, sexy, magically realistic debut about a family caught between a violent history, a taboo romance, and the mysteries lurking in their own backyard.

Every October Cara and her family become inexplicably and unavoidably accident-prone. Some years it's bad, like the season when her father died, and some years it's just a lot of cuts and scrapes. This accident season—when Cara, her ex-stepbrother, Sam, and her best friend, Bea, are 17—is going to be a bad one. But not for the reasons they think.

Cara is about to learn that not all the scars left by the accident season are physical: There's a long-hidden family secret underneath the bumps and bruises. This is the year Cara will finally fall desperately in love, when she'll start discovering the painful truth about the adults in her life, and when she'll uncover the dark origins of the accident season—whether she's ready or not.

The Accident Season is Moïra Fowley-Doyle’s debut novel and it hits shelves this week. It’s a moody, atmospheric read about a family that falls prey to accidents every year around Halloween. Sometimes the accidents have deadly consequences, so Cara’s family is understandably cautious every October. What’s causing the accidents? Is it a curse; is it a ghost story, or something else entirely? The Accident Season keeps you guessing on every page of this dreamy novel.

So let’s raise our glasses to the accident season,

To the river beneath us where we sink our souls,

To the bruises and secrets, to the ghosts in the celing,

One more drink for the watery road.

The Accident Season is set in an Irish town, where Cara lives with her mother, her older sister Alice, and her ex-stepbrother Sam. It’s October and everyone in the family is on high alert for the accident season. Cara is going through her photos when she notices that her old friend Elsie strangely appears in every one, even ones that she can’t recall ever seeing her. That mystery distracts Cara and her friends from this unlucky month, along with planning a haunted house Halloween party.

Friendship, family drama, and a forbidden romance round out this spooky tale. I didn’t always understand what was going on but I did enjoy the ride! I’d say more but I don’t want to spoil the surprises. This is a twisty, lyrical tale that’s perfect to get you in the mood for fall. I’d recommend this one to fans of Maggie Stiefvater, Nova Ren Suma, or Leslye Walton. I’m looking forward to seeing what’s next from this author.
