Mailbox Monday

Mailbox Monday is a weekly event where we share our latest book arrivals. Link up and find new mailboxes to stalk at the Mailbox Monday blog.

Hi all! I’m getting into the swing of blogging again after taking a mini hiatus in July. Between the heat, school break, politics and Comic-Con it has been hard to keep up with reviews! You may see some mini reviews as I try to catch up. Hope your July has been stellar!

Here are some of the books that have made their way to me this month:

mailbox monday

Beneath Wandering Stars by Ashlee Cowles from Merit Press – Gabi’s brother is wounded serving in Afghanistan and she honors his wishes to walk the Camino de Santiago in Spain in his name.

The Art of Holding On and Letting Go by Kristin Bartley Lenz from Elephant Rocks Books – Cara and her family are mountain climbers, but when tragedy strikes, Cara is separated from her parents and adjusting to a new living situation with her grandparents. Can she reclaim her love for climbing and find comfort with the new friends in her life?

mailbox monday

Where Love Lies by Julie Cohen from St. Martin’s Griffin – New to paperback, this romance is about Felicity, a woman married to a loving husband. One day she encounters the scent of a past love, though, and buried memories come to the surface as she questions her life choices.

The Girls by Emma Cline from Book of the Month – I was listening to this audiobook and couldn’t get into it so I’m trying it again in print. There have been a lot of Manson-type stories lately!

mailbox monday

TV (The Book): Two Experts Pick the Greatest American Shows of All Time by Alan Sepinwall and Matt Zoller Seitz from Grand Central Publishing – Maybe I’ll find my next binge-watch here!

How to Be You: Stop Trying to be Someone Else and Start Living Your Life by Jeffrey March from Penguin Random House – Jeffrey is an LGBTQ youth advocate and social media star who has created this workbook to help readers become their best self. The workbook style includes  coloring pages and writing activities to aid in the process. I like Jeffrey’s twitter a lot and the positive messages they present so I couldn’t pass up this one. (hint: look for a giveaway this week!)

mailbox monday a new class jedi academy

A New Class (Star Wars: Jedi Academy #4) by Jarrett J. Krosoczka plus swag from Big Honcho Media – This was a cute little surprise package! Victor Starspeeder starts a new school and his older sister is not pleased to have him there. Victor is also trying to work on impulse control by using the force, with the help of his mentor Yoda.

Audiobooks:

You Will Know Me by Megan Abbott, read by Lauren Fortgang from Hachette Audio – I just devoured this one about a gymnastics family who is caught up in a murder investigation.

Baby Doll by Hollie Overton, read by Jenna Lamia, MacLeod Andrews, and Ellen Archer from Hachette Audio – Lily has been held captive for eight years with her daughter Sky. Now she has to get reacquainted with life on the outside. I wanted to listen to this one for the full-cast audio.

You’ll Grow Out of It written and read by Jessi Klein from Hachette Audio – I love humorous memoirs, so even though I wasn’t familiar with Klein’s name (comedian who writes for Inside Amy Schumer) I was intrigued.  This is a great listen about relationships, gender roles, and anxiety.

My Name is Leon by Kit de Waal, read by Lenny Henry from Simon & Schuster Audio – Leon and his half-brother are separated in foster care and Leon vows to find him again. Set in Britain in the ’70s this story references noteworthy events of the time and racial politics.
