What to Watch in September

the tv date

September is a huge month for books but we also have Fall TV competing for our attention! Here are the new and returning shows I have my eye on:

New Shows

Atlanta – Sept. 6, FX.

Atlanta is about two cousins trying to make it in the Atlanta rap scene. This half-hour series stars (and was created by) Donald Glover. Glover says he wanted to make “Twin Peaks with rappers.” Sounds good to me!

Better Things – Sept. 8, FX

Better Things stars Pamela Adlon as an actress and divorced mom raising three daughters on her own.

This is Us – Sept. 20, NBC.

In the dramedy This is Us, three characters share the same birthday and some interesting similarities.

The Good Place – Sept. 19, NBC.

This new sitcom from Michael Schur (The Office, Parks and Rec) stars Kristen Bell as a new resident at The Good Place, an afterlife for good people, where Bell doesn’t feel she’s earned a spot.

Designated Survivor – Sept. 21, ABC.

Designated Survivor is a political thriller about a low-level Cabinet member who becomes POTUS after a devastating attack kills everyone else in line for the job. Stars Kiefer Sutherland, Maggie Q and Kal Penn.

Returning Favorites:

Sept. 14 American Horror Story

Sept. 19 The Voice

Sept. 20 Brooklyn Nine-Nine

Sept. 21 Empire, Modern Family, black-ish

Sept. 22 Grey’s Anatomy, Superstore, How to Get Away with Murder

Sept. 25 Quantico

Sept. 28 Younger

Movies

And here are a few bookish movies I have my eye on:

The Light Between Oceans – In theaters Sept. 2. With a 61% Rotten Tomatoes score this book adaptation seems like a safe bet. I still haven’t read this one, though maybe the movie will encourage me to pick it up!

Bridget Jones’s ‘ Baby – In theaters Sept. 16. For nostalgia’s sake (and Patrick Dempsey) I’m game to see this one. I never read Mad about the Boy but it seems like this movie doesn’t follow that plot anyway.

Miss Peregrine’s Home for Peculiar Children – In theaters Sept. 30. Tim Burton seems like a perfect fit for this book adaptation and I plan to see it opening weekend.

What will you be watching this month?

I’m looking toward to the return of: AHS, Scream Queens, Quantico, Blindspot, How To Get Away With Murder, Once Upon a Time, and The Voice. I’m also looking forward to Designated Survivor, and the reboot of MacGiver. I’m a huge horror and superhero fan, but sadly most of my shows don’t return until October. I hate waiting!?

  2. I’ll be watching college football and DWTS.

  3. I’m DYING to know what the new theme is for AHS. I heard it’s supposed to be The Mist, but I’m not actually sure what that really means? Mist monsters?? Aliens? I really don’t know. Also, The Good Place looks really fun!! I love Kristen Bell and Ted Danson, so I hope it does good!!
