What’s New in October: What to Read and Watch

what's new in october

Hard to believe it’s already October. Fall is probably my favorite season, even though it’s still so summery here at this time of year. Here’s what’s got me excited this month!

October Books

YA

Like Magic by Elaine Vickers, illustrated by Sara Not – Oct. 18. I’m sneaking a middle grade in here because it looks too wonderful to miss. In this one, three ten-year-old girls are dealing with big changes in their lives, and they are brought together with the help of a library’s treasure box.

This Adventure Ends by Emma Mills – Oct. 4. This friendship story takes the characters on the road to find a missing painting. Lots of good early buzz for this one.

Beast by Brie Spangler – Oct. 11. This Beauty and the Beast-inspired tale features a transgender Belle.

When the Moon was Ours by Anna-Marie McLemore –  Oct. 4. This author writes so beautifully, so it’s no surprise everyone’s raving about this one. In this magical realism story a transgender boy falls for his best friend.

The Twelve Days of Dash and Lily by Rachel Cohn & David Levithan – Oct. 18. So excited about this sequel, though I may have to schedule a re-read of the first book to get caught up.

What Light by Jay Asher – Oct. 11. It’s been a few years since Asher’s (Thirteen Reasons Why) last book The Future of Us. This one is about finding love at the Christmas tree lot!

Holding Up the Universe by Jennifer Niven – Oct. 4. Libby is going back to school after losing a lot of weight. Jack has a disorder where he can’t recognize faces. These two meet during a cruel game and afterwards find strength in each other.

Everyone We’ve Been by Sarah Everett – Oct. 4. This story is about grief and recovery, and also seems to have an Eternal Sunshine of the Spotless Mind element to it.

Still Life with Tornado by A.S. King – Oct. 11. King’s latest novel takes on family abuse, and of course there’s a surreal aspect as well. Can’t wait!

The Weight of Zero by Karen Fortunati – Oct. 11. This realistic story is about how a teen deals successfully with mental illness- using methods like medication and therapy. Hooray for a well-researched mental-health centered YA.

Our Chemical Hearts by Krystal Sutherland – Oct. 4. The blurb claims this one’s John Green meets Rainbow Rowell, and it certainly sounds like there is some John Green style heartbreak, but maybe I’m wrong.

Something in Between by Melissa de la Cruz – Oct. 4. It’s been a while since we’ve seen a contemporary book from this author, and this one tackles immigration reform. A timely read this election year.

ADULT/NEW ADULT

The Mothers by Brit Bennett – Oct. 11. Set in a Black community in Southern California, this debut is about three friends and how their choices one fateful summer follow them over the years. I selected this one as my Book of the Month pick.

The Wangs vs. the World by Jade Chang – Oct. 4. In this witty debut, a Chinese-American family loses everything in the stock market crash and tries to adjust to a new normal.

Today Will Be Different by Maria Semple – Oct. 4. The Where’d You Go, Bernadette author is back! This novel is about a woman who has plans to change her life but life has other plans for her.

The Secret History of Twin Peaks by Mark Frost – Oct. 18. I am so excited for the Twin Peaks revival! This novel serves to fill in the 25-year gap between the revival and the original series, and probably will create more questions than answers.

Tell the Truth, Shame the Devil by Melina Marchetta – Oct. 11. This popular YA author makes her adult debut with this mystery thriller.

Certain Dark Things by Silvia Moreno-Garcia – Oct. 25. My nod to horror this October is this supernatural tale about a vampire drug war in Mexico City.

Beautiful by Christina Lauren – Oct. 4. The Beautiful series has had its ups and downs but I’ll check out the finale to see where everyone ends up.

Four Letter Word by J. Daniels – Oct. 4. I’m reading this one now- it’s a fun romance about a relationship that develops after dialing a wrong number.

MOVIES/TV/STREAMING

There are plenty of TV distractions to keep us entertained while we wait for the Gilmore Girls revival (Netflix, November 25)

Westworld (new series) – HBO, Oct. 2.

Timeless (new series) – Oct. 3, NBC.

The Mindy Project (Season 5)- Oct. 4, Hulu.

Jane the Virgin (Season 3) – Oct. 17th, CW.

Crazy Ex-Girlfriend (Season 2) – Oct. 21st, CW.

Chance  (new series)- Oct. 19th, Hulu.

The Fall (Season 3) – Oct. 29th, Netflix.

The Great Indoors (new series) – Oct. 27th, CBS.

In Theaters

Here are some book adaptations coming soto a theater near you:

The Girl on the Train – Oct. 6

Middle School: The Worst Years of My Life – Oct. 6

Inferno – Oct. 27
