An unexpected journey leads one woman to discover that life after loss is possible, if only you can find the courage to let go...
One minute, Tegan Lawson has everything she could hope for: an adoring husband, Gabe, and a baby on the way. The next, a patch of black ice causes a devastating accident that will change her life in ways she never could have imagined.
Tegan is consumed by grief — not to mention her anger toward Gabe, who was driving on the night of the crash. But just when she thinks she’s hit rock bottom, Gabe reminds her of their Jar of Spontaneity, a collection of their dream destinations and experiences, and so begins an adventure of a lifetime.
From the bustling markets of Thailand to the flavours of Italy to the ocean waves in Hawaii, Tegan and Gabe embark on a journey to escape the tragedy and search for forgiveness. But they soon learn that grief follows you no matter how far away you run, and that acceptance comes when you least expect it.
Heartbreaking, hopeful and utterly transporting, Come Away with Me is an unforgettable debut and a luminous celebration of the strength of the human spirit.

Today I’m excited to tell you about Come Away With Me, a contemporary debut from Karma Brown. This book has a story that pulls you in right away, lots of emotion, drama and heart, and oh man, this book just gutted me! Read on to find out more about the book and also make sure to enter to win a copy so we can talk about this one. I have many feelings about this book!

Come Away With Me is about a woman who is dealing with a devastating loss. Tegan was six months pregnant when she and her new husband Gabe were in a car accident that took her unborn baby’s life. Tegan is really struggling with this loss and holds a lot of resentment towards her husband who was driving the car. To find a way to recover and reconnect, Gabe’s idea is to choose a few random locations from their “Jar of Spontaneity.” Maybe a new exotic locale will help mend their broken hearts.

This book hurt to read at times because Tegan’s grief felt so real. Tegan’s seeing therapists and has the support of her friends and loved ones, but she just can’t see out of the darkness. Tegan’s head is a bleak space to be and I was relieved when Tegan and Gabe took off on their epic adventure, hoping for the couple to heal.

I won’t tell you where Tegan and Gabe venture off to because I think that’s part of the fun of the book. I will say that if you haven’t been on any trips this summer you’ll enjoy armchair traveling to some picturesque spots in this book. The travel scenes all seemed well researched and detailed to me and made me want to visit the locales.

Since the book takes place during a stressful event, the author plays with time to show you Tegan and Gabe in happier times, making you root for this couple to rekindle their love. This loss is a real challenge for the couple and I tore through the pages hoping that they would come out okay on the other side.

Author Karma Brown does a great job weaving this story with the different timelines, and managing the alternately happy/sad/romantic tone of the book. I’m not going to lie- there were times when I was upset at times reading this one and wanted to throw my e-reader across the room. But, ultimately I think Brown fixed what she broke and I was satisfied with the conclusion.

There are book club discussion questions at the end of the novel, and I do think this is a great book club choice. You are going to want to talk about it! And you’ll find some good food ideas if you want to make a themed evening of it. (Bring wine and tissues!) Tegan’s inspiring story is one of strength, love, hope and loss and I’m sure it will stay with me for years to come. I recommend this one for fans of Taylor Jenkins Reid’s books or for anyone that needs a good heartbreaking read.

What intrigues me about the book is all the emotions that are captured inside the pages, I love it when I am exhausted at the end of a good read. I think my favorite heartbreak read (there are so many) is Everything Everything. Why? The potential of the characters, the unknowing, the anticipation, and it was all contained inside a book.

  2. That does sound emotionally gut wrenching! I think my favorite heartbreaking read is Lucia, Lucia by Adriana Trigiani. Thanks for the giveaway.

Thanks for this captivating and memorable giveaway. When an emotional novel is heartbreaking and special it is memorable and unforgettable. My favorite heartbreaking novel is The Tea Rose by Jennifer Donnelly.

  4. When a reader can say a book “gutted me” I know I’m in for a fantastic read! Thanks so much for being a part of the tour for this amazing book.

  5. Suzy says:

I have read the reviews for Come Away With Me and they’ve all been so fantastic. I know it’s supposed to be a tear jerker, but I’m ready considering every book I’ve attempted to read the past month and a half I’ve abandoned. The book that gutted me is Me Before You by Jojo Moyes.

  6. Summer says:

I love a good sad book, it’s kind of cathartic, I guess. My favorite heartbreaking read is probably either The Fault In Our Stars, or Little Women, though Little Women isn’t heartbreaking all the way through, there’s just the one crushing part.

  7. Jennifer says:

My favorite recent heartbreaking read was You Before Me by Jojo Moyes. 🙂
