Lament: The Faerie Queen’s Deception by Maggie Stiefvater
My rating: 5 of 5 stars

I have been meaning to read this series for a while after hearing good things about it. And I loved Shiver, so I had high hopes, and I’m happy to say this book did not disappoint!

Lament tells the story of 16 year old Deirdre, or Dee for short. Dee is a harpist, who finds that she is a cloverhand, which is someone that sees fairies. The mysterious Luke suddenly appears in her life, and she falls for him, but is not entirely sure he can be trusted. Dee has a loyal and hilarious friend named James, who would like to take their friendship to the next level.

Dee finds that her family has a history with seeing fairies, and she is learning to deal with this unexpected gift. There is action, romance and mystery in this story, and it held my attention throughout.

I love Maggie Stiefvater‘s writing, and I thoroughly enjoyed this original take on fairies. Some of the recent books about fairies have been hit or miss with me but this one is a keeper.

I was left wanting more James in this book, but happily the companion novel Ballad is told from his point of view.
