Waiting On Guy in Real Life by Steve Brezenoff

Waiting on WednesdayWaiting on Wednesday is a weekly event brought to you by Breaking the Spine where we spotlight upcoming books we can’t wait to read.

There are so many great sounding contemporary books due out in 2014! One of the books that has me excited is Guy in Real Life, a book about two strangers who literally crash into each other on their bikes & find what they didn’t know they were looking for.

Title Summary:

Guy in Real Life

Lesh and Svetlana, two teens from St. Paul, Minnesota, are adrift in a sea of social coterie, desperate for something to change. When they crash into one another in a drunken bicycle accident at two am, they don’t yet know how close they are to finding it. For now, Svetlana is simply looking for a fifth member to legitimize the Central High School Gaming Club, and Lesh is looking to escape his being grounded for said drunkenness by entering, reluctantly, the world of online role playing games.

Lesh’s gaming life takes an interesting turn as, unable to figure out how to speak to Svetlana, he “becomes” her in-game. When real life and in-game life inevitably become entwined, Lesh and Svetlana both start to realize that the lines they draw to keep their lives in order are not so easy to maintain. Especially when you no longer understand why you drew them in the first place.

The cover is clean and appealing, and reminds me a bit of the style of Eleanor & Park. I like how the title and cover give a nod to the gaming aspect of the story, and the pixelated characters show their different styles but that they have things in common. Though I’m not a gamer myself I inevitably enjoy reading about gamers and Lesh & Svetlana’s story sounds so intriguing to me.

What book are you eagerly anticipating this week?

  1. This is my first time seeing this one and it sounds kind of interesting. Though I am a bit creeped out by the whole roleplaying aspect where he ‘becomes’ her online, lol. I know it’s innocent but I think I’ve seen way too many weirdos in my online games. Thanks for sharing, I’ll have to check it out when it hits shelves.

  2. What an interesting-sounding book! I’ve never heard of it, but I like the idea behind it. I’m not a gamer either, but I kind of wish I could be. I am no good. 🙂 Great pick!
