Top Ten Tuesday: Top 10 books I wish I’d read as a kid

Top Ten Tuesday is an original feature/weekly meme created by The Broke and the Bookish featuring a new top ten list each week. Everyone can participate- head on over to their blog and sign up.

This week’s topic is Top 10 Books I wish I’d read as a kid.

I was a pretty prolific reader as a kid, but there are some books I never got around to reading. My favorite author was Judy Blume, and I devoured all her books. I also read the Nancy Drew series, and books by S.E. Hinton, Madeline L’Engle, and Beverly Cleary. Some books that I missed out on as kid, I ended up reading with my daughter later.

Bridge to Terabithia by Katherine Paterson

I think I would have loved this story of adventure and friendship.

Little House on the Prairie series by Laura Ingalls Wilder

I read the first book but never finished the series. I read it for awhile with my daughter when she was reading it for school.

Where the Red Fern Grows by Wilson Rawls

A classic, touching story about life, a boy and his dogs.

The Witch of Blackbird Pond by Elizabeth George Speare

I would have loved this historical fiction book about a girl learning about acceptance in a time of witch hysteria.

Bunnicula by Deborah and James Howe

This story about a vampire bunny would have greatly amused me.

The Incredible Journey by Sheila Burnford

A heart-warming book about dogs and their dangerous journey home.

In the Night Kitchen by Maurice Sendak

I read Where the Wild Things Are and think I would have enjoyed this one for the beautiful illustrations.

Where the Sidewalk Ends by Shel Silverstein

I was never exposed to Shel Silverstein’s books but think I would have enjoyed their imaginative quality.

Watership Down by Richard Adams

I never read this in school, but think I would have liked to read this classic.

Goosebumps series by R.L Stine

I liked scary books as a kid and would have enjoyed reading these.

What books do you wish you had read as a kid?

You have interesting lists here. I also wished I had read the Goosebumps series as those who read at the time made so much noise about it in class.

There’s a few on this list I wish I’d read too…but no worries with the Ingalls books. I read them a million times!

  3. I have yet to read some of these! I did love the Little House on the Prairie series as a child. I hope to read some of the others with my daughter in a few years 🙂

Wow! What a great list… I also have a wish list of books that I wish I read as a child. I’m currently making my way through the list by reading them to my children. Currently we are reading The Lion the Witch and The wardrobe. My son is 6 and my daughter is 2 and they absolutely hate reading books without pictures. I know it’s very selfish of me, I will admit it. I will definitely continuing torturing my kids by adding some of your picks, if not all, to my list. Thanks Alima 🙂

I think it’s great that you’re getting a second chance with the books you missed out on by reading them with your daughter. =) I’m still catching up by reading them on my own, but there’s something richer about reading them with a young person, I think.

I have a similar list. I’m working on reading a few of them this year (like The Secret Garden and a Laura Ingalls Wilder!)

I got to read the first on the list and some of the Goosebumps books 🙂 I wish I read more when I was a kid too

I’ve a 7 yr old who hates to read. Makes me really sad. As a kid, Mom was my major influence in reading. She made me read Little Prince, Hope with the Flowers, and Jonathan Livingston Seagull. Aside from those, have no idea which good book to get my baby — enough to get him hooked to the printed page. I’ll hunt for your hints at the local bookshop. Hope to find a few of them there. Thanks.

You have a great list! I loved Where the Sidewalk Ends as a kid. My mom got me an autographed copy. Hmmm…. I wonder where that is. I think it’s in my classroom. I’ll have to go hunt for it now.

I tried reading R.L. Stine as a kid, but was just too big of a wimp. I read and re-read the Little House on the Prairie books, though. I’m glad you’ve gotten the chance to read some of the books with your daughter — her list of “missed out ons” will be shorter thanks to you! 🙂
