Top Ten Tuesday is an awesome feature from The Broke and the Bookish and brings you a new top ten list each week. This week is Top Ten Tuesday freebie week and I’m featuring Books to make you LOL!
Listed in no particular order, here are some LOL recommendations. Most of these I’ve read or listened to and some are on my TBR:
Humorous Memoirs – one of my favorite new categories, especially in audio format:
1. Let’s Pretend This Never Happened by Jenny Lawson – The Bloggess shares stories that prove that truth is stranger than fiction. Many LOL moments that had me sharing her stories to anyone who would listen.
2. Bossypants by Tina Fey – Tales from the trenches of SNL and 30 Rock, as well as witty observations about beauty, weight, and child rearing.
3. Jeneration X by Jen Lancaster – Humorous and sarcastic stories about becoming a grown up, including life lessons that should appeal to Gen-Xers.
4. Is Everyone Hanging Out Without Me? (And Other Concerns) by Mindy Kaling – Insights into the entertainment world from The Office star. She also shares hilarious life observations.
5. Girl Walks Into a Bar…Comedy Calamities, Dating Disasters, and a Midlife Miracle by Rachel Dratch – From SNL to unexpected motherhood, I’m sure Rachel Dratch has some funny stories to tell.
Young Adult:
6. Deadly Cool & Social Suicide by Gemma Halliday – I just finished Deadly Cool and I’m reading Social Suicide now. These books are so sharp and funny. They deal with murder mysteries at a high school, so I guess you’d call it black comedy, reminiscent of Heathers.
7. Freshman Year & Other Unnatural Disasters by Meredith Zeitlin – This is another one that made me laugh out loud. A hilarious book about high school, complete with a musical production you will never forget.
8. Jessica’s Guide to Dating on the Dark Side by Beth Fantaskey – A really fun take on the girl meets vampire story. Makes me smile just remembering it.
MG/YA New releases:
9. Three Times Lucky by Sheila Turnage – This MG book sounds so fun and quirky and charming. It’s about a young girl named Mo and her adventures in Tupelo Landing, NC. I’m excited to listen to the audiobook of this one.
10. 52 Reasons To Hate My Father by Jessica Brody- About an heiress forced to work a different low-wage job every week for a year. Sounds cute and funny.
What books make you LOL?
I was actually expecting Bossypants to be funnier, but it’s good. Nice list!
The Bloggess rules!
I’ve been meaning to read Bossypants, and Deadly Cool sounds superb!
Great list π
My TTT π
Um…ARGH? Now i want to add even more titles to my towering pile of To Read Books! LOL I loved Jessica’s Guiding to Dating on the Dark Side and I think there’s a sequel. I’m looking forward to reading Jessica Brody’s newest! Will have to put some of your other recs on my list! Thanks! π
Awesome list! I really want to read Tina Fey and Mindy Kaling’s books!
I’m reading Three Times Lucky right now and Mo sure does make me laugh! Great list!
Looking forward to your review- I can’t wait to listen to Three Times Lucky π
I am dying to read more from The Bloggess! This is at the top of my tbr list.
Ok so I remember the first book that made me laugh out loud was Ellen’s memior she published in the mid 90s. It had me laughing hysterically. Also, Bridget Jones’ Diary had me rolling with laughter! Now a days middle grade novels crack me up more than YA, like The Strange Case of Origami Yoda. So, I need to a) Read some of the books on your list, and b)do my own list on this topic sometime soon! Thanks!
I had Bridget Jones Diary on the list and then I decided to list memoirs so it didn’t fit. It is so funny though so thank you for mentioning it!
I love Ellen and can’t believe I haven’t read any of her books yet- thanks for the rec!
There are so many funny MG books – I’d love to see your list!
Great list. I have the Mindy kaling book that I need to read. 52 reasons looks teally fun, too, and I love jessicas guide. Now to add more books to my tbr pile…
I just love The Bloggess, she is pretty crazy! I haven’t read her book, but I will put it on the TBR pile.
Her book is hysterical!
Great list! I really want to read Bossypants and Lets Pretend This Never Happened.
I do love a good LOL book! I’ll have to pick up Tina Fey’s. Haven’t read it yet and I could use a good laugh.
Great list!
My Top Ten
Aww, I love this list. I think I’m too negative most of the time, so I should read all of them. *grin*

Nice picks! I should add Jessica’s Guide to Dating the Dark Side to my TBR list … it looks very cute! So does Freshman Year & Other Natural Disasters. π
Nice list. I’ll have to check some of these out. Bossypants is a favorite of mine and Letβs Pretend This Never Happened was pretty funny too. I just finished Tough $hit by Kevin Smith … and that was also quite hysterical.
Tough Sh*t is so funny! I’ve featured it a lot lately so I left it off the list this time, so I’m glad you mentioned it π
I just finished Jessica’s Guide… was so cute! I love love love Bossypants; need to get my hands on some of the other memoirs you’ve got listed there!
I love books that make me laugh, though admittedly, I haven’t read any in a long time. I’m actually unfamiliar with every book on this list, though I’ve heard of 52 Reasons to Hate My Father, Jessica’s Guide to Dating on the Darkside, and Freshman Year and Other Unnatural Disasters (lol, I love the title).
Adding EVERYTHING to my TBR pile! Thanks for the list!
I need to get my hands on Deadly Cool, I hear it’s funny and really good. I like your selection, some I’ll need to add to my tbr list π
A writer that ALWAYS manages to make me laugh is Woody Allen – the collected prose of Woody Allen is the most hilarious book I’ve ever read.
Yeah! Deadly Cool series! π
I have Jenny Lawson’s book next to me and I can’t wait to read it! She’s hysterical but also very smart. Great list!
