Boo! Top Ten Scary Book Covers

Top Ten Tuesday is an original feature from The Broke and the Bookish. I haven’t read too many scary books so far this fall, but I did get into the Halloween spirit looking for spooky covers for this week’s topic. Apparently I find black and white cover photos especially scary!

1. Hollow City by Ransom Riggs – Isn’t the cover creepy? Are you looking forward to the sequel of Miss Peregrine? (due out in January)

2. The Dark Between by Sonia Gensler- Ghosts! There’s something sinister about spooky vanishing portraits in a dark hallway.

3. Asylum by Madeleine Roux – A teen attends a summer program in a former asylum, and he and his friends uncover a dark mystery. Complete with creepy photos a la Miss Peregrine.

4. In the Shadow of Blackbirds by Cat Winters – Creepy! I think this cover is scaring me off the book.

5A Matter of Days by Amber Kizer – Spooky trees signify the desolate landscape of this post apocalyptic novel.

6. The End Games by T. Michael Martin – Zombies! The blurb begins “It happened on Halloween. The world ended. And a dangerous Game brought it back to life.”

7. Red Hill by Jamie McGuire – I’m a scaredy cat and even I wanted this book to be scarier. But that red hill and dark sky on the cover certainly sets a dark tone.

8. 17 & Gone by Nova Ren Suma – Such a cool, mysterious cover for a story about missing girls. I’m going to start this one soon.

9. Find Me by Romily Bernard – A computer hacker tries to solve a murder. I like the mysterious look of the cover and how it ties into the story.

10. The Coldest Girl in Coldtown by Holly Black – A cold dead hand sets the stage for this scary vampire novel.

Which cover do you think is the scariest? And what spooky covers made your list?

  1. I love love love Find Me. I think it’s creepy in a different way, like it could happen to anyone. These covers are so sufficiently creepy. I have to plan better next year so I can have a month creepy reads session.

In the Shadow of Blackbirds is AMAZING. One of my favorites from this year, and definitely the best debut out of all of them that I’ve read. Don’t let the cover scare you off! 🙂

I almost put The Dark Between on my list, because I agree that that cover is creepy. Great choices this week!

  3. I agree, I wanted more scare from Red Hill, but the cover was really amazing.

Creepy children on covers always freak me out! I’ve seen Asylum on a few lists now. It does have a freaky cover!

  6. These covers are all really creepy! But somehow make me feel compelled to read the books, especially The End Games and Hollow City. Great list as always Lucy 🙂

  16. Love the Blackbirds cover–and you would enjoy it Lucy, don’t let it scare you off! I like the covers for Asylum, End Games, and Coldtown too, although I didn’t end up enjoying the books very much. (And they aren’t scary, either.) Glad to hear you’re going to try 17 & Gone soon, though!

  17. Great covers-very creepy!!

That… is an even scarier cover of Miss Peregrine’s Home than I’ve seen before. o.O

  20. I can’t wait to read The Dark Between! It looks amazing. And the creepy-as-heck cover of Shadow of Blackbirds is actually what convinced me to read the book in the first place. I rather liked it. Unfortunately, I thought the cover of Miss Peregrine’s Home For Peculiar Children was actually scarier than the story turned out to be… Though the concept of including such horrifying found photos was an excellent idea.
