In her twenties, Emma Blair marries her high school sweetheart, Jesse. They build a life for themselves, far away from the expectations of their parents and the people of their hometown in Massachusetts. They travel the world together, living life to the fullest and seizing every opportunity for adventure.

On their first wedding anniversary, Jesse is on a helicopter over the Pacific when it goes missing. Just like that, Jesse is gone forever. Emma quits her job and moves home in an effort to put her life back together. Years later, now in her thirties, Emma runs into an old friend, Sam, and finds herself falling in love again. When Emma and Sam get engaged, it feels like Emma’s second chance at happiness.

That is, until Jesse is found. He’s alive, and he’s been trying all these years to come home to her. With a husband and a fiancé, Emma has to now figure out who she is and what she wants, while trying to protect the ones she loves.

Who is her one true love? What does it mean to love truly? Emma knows she has to listen to her heart. She’s just not sure what it’s saying.

Taylor Jenkins Reid writes my favorite kind of stories- full of emotion, heart, and more than a little angst. I jumped at the chance to read her latest book One True Loves. It’s about love, fate, and soulmates and ponders the question- “can you have more than one true love?” One True Loves gave me a lot to think about relationships, following your heart and doing what makes you happy. Emma is in an impossible situation choosing between her “One True Loves” and my heart ached for her while I couldn’t turn the pages quickly enough.

The premise of One True Loves is that Emma lost her adventurer husband Jesse (her high school sweetheart) in a helicopter accident on their first anniversary. She mourns his death for years and struggles to move on. She unexpectedly runs into her old high school friend (the one that got away) Sam and they fall in love. Then, a call comes in from Jesse – he’s been alive the whole time, living on an island and fighting his way back to Emma. Their reunion is bittersweet considering the circumstances – who will Emma choose?

Emma’s caught between a rock and a hard place with this love triangle. Both Jesse and Sam are great catches and book boyfriends, and Emma is a version of her best self with both of them. But where does her heart belong? It was killing me seeing what this situation was doing to her and her guys. I didn’t know how Taylor Jenkins Reid was going to heal my heart after this no-win situation!

Emma’s family runs a bookstore and her parents and sister add interest to the story- plus, bonus, books-about-books! I liked seeing the sister relationship evolve over the years as Emma gets closer to Marie, “the bookseller’s daughter.” The bookstore is a character itself in the novel, as Emma and Marie experience mixed feelings about taking it over someday.

Taylor Jenkins Reid writes about relationships in such a raw, realistic way that tugs on your emotions. It’s hard to read about these uncomfortable truths sometimes but they always give me food for thought. I can’t recommend Taylor’s books highly enough if you love emotional, romantic reads. Tuck One True Loves in your bag for your summer getaway but prepare for a book hangover. (The cure: more TJR books?)

I won an annotated copy of One True Loves in an author giveaway (thanks TJR!) and this may be my most favorite thing ever! It was seriously such a treat to read behind-the-scenes info from the author herself! In some of  the notes the author talks about:

  • Her personal connection to Acton, Massachusetts
  • That Blair Books is based on Willow Books
  • How most of her characters are food-motivated (I need to try tres leches!)
  • She loves Leonardo DiCaprio’s Romeo & Juliet, and thinks that Friday Night Lights is the best TV show of all time. (I concur, Texas Forever!)

She also drew little hearts in the margins of particularly emotional scenes. I maybe want annotated versions of all my favorite books now!

While writing One True Loves the author binge-watched Felicity:

One True Loves Felicity Ben

And for a Jesse visual here’s Ben Covington himself (Scott Speedman) along with Felicity Porter (Keri Russell) from Felicity. A binge-watch does sound tempting!

One of Taylor Jenkins Reid’s favorite scenes to write is the scene when Jesse and Emma fall for each other at an end-of-the-school-year pool party. And check out the Blair Books bookmark!

  1. I’ve read one of her books and it was a little too angsty for me. Maybe I’m too old?

I haven’t read any of her books, but I’ve heard really good things about them. My favorite contemporary romance is probably Archer’s Voice by Mia Sheridan. Favorite vacation destination, Jamaica. Thanks!

I love Greece. It is a perfect place for a romantic holiday!

  6. Summer says:

I read Forever Interrupted last year and I just loved it, the relationships, the emotional depth, so I’m really looking forward to reading more by Tara Jenkins Reid, and a book with a character inspired by Ben from Felicity, seems a pretty good place to start.

  7. I love TJR’s books! Must look out for this one Down Under.
