Cybils YA Fiction Winner and Giveaway

This year I had the pleasure of serving as a Round One panelist for the YA Fiction Cybils awards. There were approx. 178 titles at the start of the process, and basically all I did was read for the Oct.-Dec. time frame as we evaluated the nominees. At the end of December we narrowed down the nominees to 6 finalists:

Dr. Bird’s Advice for Sad Poets by Evan Roskos (book review to come)

Eleanor & Park by Rainbow Rowell (audiobook review)

Out of the Easy by Ruta Sepetys (audiobook review)

Rose Under Fire by Elizabeth Wein (audiobook review to come)

Sex & Violence by Carrie Mesrobian (book review)

Yaqui Delgado Wants to Kick Your Ass by Meg Medina (audiobook review)

I think all of the finalists are standouts in YA Fiction and I love them to pieces. Of course, there were some books that got away that didn’t make the cut. And I’m sure I’ll get over it eventually, haha. But really, I’m enormously proud of this list, and all the thought and care (and blood, sweat and tears) that go into the judging process.

yaqui delgado wants to kick your asThe second round judges read all of the six finalists and chose Yaqui Delgado Wants to Kick Your Ass as the winner! Hooray! I couldn’t be happier about their decision. Check out the list of all the winners by category on the Cybils site.

Yaqui is a powerful and heartwarming coming of age book that deals with bullying and family issues. You might remember that it got some attention during Banned Books Week, but it’s so much more than its “controversial” title.

I was going to offer a copy of Yaqui up for giveaway, but instead I’ll give the winner the choice of any of the outstanding six finalists.

The Giveaway has ended:

Congrats to Nara who wins a Cybils book of her choice! Thanks to everyone who entered!

I haven’t heard about Yaqui Delgado Wants to Kick Your Ass by Meg Medina until I came across your post and it sounds really intriguing. All these books sounds fantastic (I read and loved Eleanor & Park) but that one caught my eye. Thank you! Enjoy your weekend. 🙂
