I recently came across this contemporary YA book, and bonus – it’s set on Thanksgiving! How timely!

The Other Way Around by Sashi Kaufman

Publication Date: March 1, 2014 from Carolrhoda LAB

Book Info: Author * Goodreads * Amazon * Author Q&A

Title Summary:

The Other Way Around

Andrew West goes to an all-girls school and he still can’t get a date. If that’s not bad enough, his Mom is the headmaster. Everyone seems to have the wrong idea about Andrew. His teachers think he’s a good student who doesn’t apply himself -he really is trying. The kids at his old school thought he was a goth. His cousin Barry thinks he’s gay.

When his Thanksgiving break goes tragically awry he decides to run away. He catches a ride with a strange group of older teenagers. The Freegans are street performers and dumpster divers. As Andrew travels the country with his new friends he leaves behind the expectations of others and discovers what he expects of himself.

I’ve read a couple books from Carolrhoda Lab recently and they have some pretty interesting titles, and it sounds like this book is no exception. The Other Way Around is Sashi Kaufman’s debut novel and is about a guy who attends an all-girl’s school (what?) and wants to find his place in the world. Along the way there’s even a Thanksgiving road trip with Freegans! Sounds very quirky to me, and I can’t wait to check it out.

What book are you eagerly anticipating this week?

Oh, and Happy Thanksgivukkah!

I love stories about teens running away from home. I know that’s wrong of me, but it was a dream I always had when I was that age, LOL! Great choice, Lucy. Happy Thanksgiving
